100 Hubs in 30 Days Case Study

I’ve decided to participate in Court’s 100 Hubs in 30 Day challenge.

Edit: this has now been changed to 200 Hubs in 30 Days!

I’m going to do my own parallel case study and share the results with you guys. I’ll give most of the details (though I don’t think I’ll be giving the specific niches or keywords) about this experiment (how long the content, my style of writing, how I work the backlinks, the SERP rankings for each hub, amount of money I make per hub, etc).

Now, for those of you who don’t know, hub pages are a sort of mini website. You basically write about a specific topic. You can write an article and include video clips and pictures. Hubpages are essentially the same as squidoo lenses, though they haven’t been slapped by Google, yet.

You can ostensibly make money from hubs through Adsense sharing. You enable adsense on your hub and hubpages.com keeps a portion of the revenue from each click.

Personally, I am not really convinced that putting so much effort into someone else’s domain is a good thing and I have doubts about the long term viability of such a money making scheme (it’s better to invest the time in writing content for your own domain). I think it’s better for you to create 100 new niche blogs than 100 hub sites. However, Hubpages are becoming quite popular and it’s a no brainer to create one and get it up and running in a few minutes. Also, having 100 hubs can be powerful linking tool.

Now, I’m willing to bet my socks that the average Hubber doesn’t make much in the way of coin. I’m willing to bet this is because the hubs are not targeted to specific (money-making) niche keywords and are not backed with backlinks.

Proper keyword selection, the use of SEO, and backing up each up with backlinks is a sure way get them ranked high for the keywords AND make some money. The natural domain authority of Hubpages.com gives each up a “leg-up” in the SERP’s — which is probably why some people (including Court), makes a bit of money a few hub pages. I also suspect that people make money from hub pages because of the “focused” nature of each hubs. Since hubs are essentially 1 page (sometimes a very LONG page) minisites, they lend themselves very well to niche targetting. Even if a person doesn’t know what niche marketing is or how to target a specific keyword, the process my happen sort of organically with hubs. You create an account then decide you want to create a hub to “provide” a solution to some problem. You then end up with a hub that happens to target a money keyword and lol and behold, you get some ad clicks.

Now, as I’ve explained, hubpages make money based on Google Adsense clicks. So you need to target your writing and content in such a way as to generate good ads. Now, with Hubpages, the key here is proper keyword selection. Writing a general hub about “John’s Basketball Tips” and a properly keyword targeted hub about “The top acne shampoo products” are worlds apart as far as being able to entice potential clicks.

So, it’s essential to choose keywords that target a problem people are looking to solve (skin care problems, weight, etc) and keywords that actually have advertisers. Quantity here is also going to be key. I’m willing to bet with 100 or so niche-based hubs, you will probably get a few clicks a day due to the sheer amount of hubs.

Part of this experiment will also play around with how to write for Adsense clicks. I’m going to write hubs that beat around the bush and try to write so as to get the user to click on the links. I’m also going to create really good hubs that answer the questions being asked by the user. I want to compare the ad click results for each “style” of writing.

So, here are the rules I will be following:

- Create 3, high-quality 400-500-word hubs each day.
- Each Hub will target a niche keyword that has money potential
- Each Hub will be written with SE) in mind
- 30 Hubs will not provide an actual answer (to encourage clicks) to the “problem”
- 15 Hubs will not be backed up with Backlinks;
- 85 Hubs will receive a dose of backlinks from AMA, UAW, BS, BMD, and a few other programs
- I’ll post an update every couple days on this site, detailing my progress

Here are the major questions I want to find answers to

- Can I make money with Hubpages
- Will answering the “question” reduce the number of Adsense Ad clicks?
- Do you need to send backlinks to each hub to actually make money

So it’s time for me to start writing those hub pages.

  1. I have a few hubs but never got much traffic. I guess because I haven’t done all the usual things to get backlinks for them. I’m reluctant to spend the time to do this, I’d rather spend the time on my own domains. I admire your drive to make all those hubs! That’s a lot of work!
I’ll be interested to see how it works out and if it’s really worth the amount of work needed.

  2. I’m doing the challenge to. I started on hubpages - I kept going with them after I gave up on IM - because I liked the community. The hubs were pretty random, I didn’t know what a kw was I and never built any backlinks - but I make about $100/month from my hubs over 100 now but only really about 20 make any more - I was that clueless.
I started a new user for this challenge and this lady does know about kw research and backlinks so I will interested to see what happens…

Yea, I think you can do very well with 100 keyword focused niches. I’m very keen to see what I can do with my 100 or so.

If your making about 100 a month with 100 or so unfocused hubs, you can probably make a killing with 100 grizz style MFA hubs :)

I also like the idea that you can add on ebay affiliate listings and amazon — extra income sources that blend well to some niches like hair loss or skin care.

  5. You might want to pay the extra 9 dollars to your domain registrar and have them hide your registration info.

Yea. Always a good idea. For the most part, this is my public profile so I’m not really paranoid. For other sites and stuff, it’s not tied to my public identity.
